Fireworks:
Stratford’s fireworks display has been postponed due to inclement weather, including showers and thunderstorms, that are in the forecast for Thursday and Friday, Mayor Laura Hoydick announced Wednesday. The fireworks, originally scheduled for Short Beach at sundown on Thursday, July 1st, will now be held Wednesday, July 7th. A new rain date of July 8 has been set, as inclement weather was also in the forecast for the original rain date. The event will remain at Short Beach as planned, scheduled for sundown which should be around 9 p.m.
 Up In Smoke
Adult possession of recreational cannabis is now legal in Connecticut and police can no longer use its smell as probable cause to stop a vehicle as the first provisions of a recently-passed law go into effect. People at least 21 years old can now carry up to 1.5 ounces or possess up to 5 ounces in their homes or locked in the glove box or trunk of their vehicles.
The law, which was passed two weeks ago, will also impact how police interact with motorists when the smell of cannabis is present. The odor is no longer considered probable cause or reasonable suspicion to stop and search a person or their vehicle.
Kids Free at Beardsley Zoo this Summer
Thanks to the state of Connecticut and funds from the American Rescue Plan, the Zoo will launch a summer-long KIDS ARE FREE program at the Zoo every day from July 1 through September 6th.
The “Connecticut Summer at the Museum” program invites any Connecticut resident 18 years old and younger, plus one Connecticut resident accompanying adult, to enjoy a day at the Zoo for free. You still need to make a reservation online so we can maintain an appropriate number of people on grounds at any one time.
In addition to Kids Are Free, they are offering another special summer-long program: Food For Thought! In partnership with Cooperative Educational Services and Green Village Initiative, they will be teaching students and families about the benefits of fresh, healthy food, and how gardening and farming enrich our lives. Kiosks will be set up in three locations on Zoo grounds five days a week.
The Zoo’s renovated New England Farmyard opens on Saturday, July 10th! There will be a new silo, windmill, New England meadow, and new farm animals!
