Stratford American Legion Post 42
By Tim Cox
Stratford American Legion was chartered October 3, 1919, in honor of George Anderson, Charles Dunn and Peter Kochiss. They were the first three men from Stratford who were killed in WWI.
With over 100 years of service to Stratford, we meet on the first Monday of the month at 7:00 PM. We are seeking new members, and are open to all honorably discharged veterans.
The American Legion Post 42 building was located on Main Street, right next to the Stratford Library. Back in the 70’s the library was looking to move to a bigger location. Post 42 agreed to donate our building for the expansion of the library, keeping it on Main Street in the town center. There were plans in the works to build the Baldwin Community Center. An agreement was made that the library would expand into our facility and a new American Legion building was to be built adjacent to the Baldwin Center.
Our new building was never built, and we have been forced to meet at the Baldwin Center, and have been meeting there for over 30 years.
Recently we were approached by Raymond T. Goldbach VFW Post 9460 and invited to move into their home. We all agreed this would be a great benefit to Post 42, as this gives us all access to what they have to offer.
We may be from different armed forces, but we are all on the same team. VFW 9460 is also the home of the Marine Corps League Housatonic Detachment 1129 and now the Anderson, Dunn, Kochiss American Legion Post 42.
The American Legion is open to all honorably discharged veterans, regardless of war time service. We are always looking for new members to continue the legacy.
