Weekly Update from State Representative Kaitlyn Shake

Share

Dear Neighbor,

It was a productive week at the Capitol with the House back in session on Wednesday 4/9/25. During our session, we debated and voted on executive and legislative nominations including on the Utility Commissioners of the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) and the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Airport Authority. During Wednesday’s session, I was proud to recognize Stratford’s 2025 Bunnell Boys Basketball team in the chamber and congratulate them on their back-to back State Championship WIN! Go Bulldogs!

I am honored to serve as your State Representative and to have the opportunity to be the voice of Stratford residents in Hartford. I will continue to provide updates on the work being done during our legislative session. Below, you will find legislative updates, resources for you and your family, and local updates.

On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to attend a press conference with the Early Childhood Caucus about funding for early childhood care and education programs. With all the uncertainty many of us are feeling with the recent federal funding cuts, our caucus reaffirmed our commitment to the programs many families rely on. This session there are many proposed bills, including H.B. 5003 and S.B. 1, to address early childcare and education. I am proud to be a member of this caucus and support families and children in our communities.

Wednesday we celebrated Healthy Schools Week during a press conference where my colleagues and I expressed our support for H.B. 6922. A portion of this bill focuses on enhancing the quality of air in school facilities by addressing infrastructure improvements. The environmental health needs in our schools need to be addressed, especially in our older school buildings.
We must take action and protect our students and families from potential health risks. Read more here.

This week, I met with advocates from the United Way of Connecticut to discuss a state Child Tax Credit and how it can provide families with the financial support they need and I am a proud co-sponsor of HB5986. It is a privilege to be able to meet with advocates like the United Way of Connecticut about what legislation will support residents across the state. I look forward to continuing these conversations with the United Way of Connecticut and others throughout session and supporting their advocacy efforts. If you missed my freshman caucus Op-Ed last week please take a few minutes to give it a read.

Wishing a happy and meaningful Passover to all who celebrate! May this season of freedom and renewal bring peace, joy, and hope for you and your family.

While the legislature was in session, our hearts were with those we honor on Former POW Day, a solemn reminder of freedom’s cost.  Thank you all for your service.

This week we celebrated Health Equity Week across Connecticut. This is a time to reflect on the importance of addressing disparities in healthcare and ensuring all residents have access to the care they need. On Monday, my colleagues held a press conference to discuss the need for policies that promote health equity and provide resources to our underserved communities.

Health Equity Week is a reminder of our ongoing commitment to fight for accessible and affordable healthcare for everyone. Together, we can work toward a healthier and more equitable future for all.

Thursday, I visited our Stratford Library to celebrate National Library Week. This year’s theme is “Drawn to the Library”, which highlights the importance of all libraries and the communities they serve. Libraries play an essential role in providing access to knowledge and lifelong learning opportunities. I encourage you all to visit our local library located at 2203 Main Street and take advantage of the many resources and amazing programs for people of all ages.

Next week the Stratford Recreation Department is offering its Spring Break Clubhouse program! Registration is still open and you have the option to register for the whole week or select days. Click here to register!

The Stratford YMCA is holding their Annual YMCA Healthy Kids on April 26th from 10 am to 1 pm. This event features a variety of family-friendly activities to encourage healthy kids. The event is free and open to the public.

On April 28th, the Stratford Board of Ed will host its Career and Technical Education (CTE) Showcase at Stratford High School from 6-7 p.m. This is a great opportunity for students to explore career pathways in various fields, explore course offerings, and learn more about the workforce.
