The Stratford Library Children’s Department has announced the purchase of 6 LEGO Spike Essential Kits for their young patrons. The new purchase was made possible from a grant received from the Stratford Rotary Club.
LEGO SPIKE is a learning system that uses LEGO building elements and coding to help students learn STEAM concepts. It’s part of the LEGO Learning System and is designed for students in grades 1–8:
The sets use problem-solving and storytelling to introduce kids to programming and robotics. It includes 449 pieces, including a control brick, motors, sensor, light brick, and minfigures. Lessons start with illustrations and teach students to build simple machines and write programs.
Lego Spike kits use a drag-and-drop coding language based on Scratch, along with hardware and programming elements. It helps students learn critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and includes easy-entry projects and creative design possibilities. The SPIKE Prime app is available on iOS, Android, Windows 10, and Chrome, and includes programming and lesson plans that can be passed to the programmable hub.
students learn the essential STEAM and 21st century skills needed to become the innovative minds of tomorrow… while having fun!
The kits come with everything children need to build their LEGO project. Using a Chromebook, children follow instructions and, upon finishing, they are then able to program their project to move.
The Children’s Department is planning two related events this summer on Tuesday, June 11 at 4 P.M., and Saturday, August 24 at 2:30 P.M.
