A landmark report released this week by the UN’s Intergovernmental Report on Climate Change made plain that strong action is needed to stave off worst case outcomes from climate change. Researchers,  activists, and government agencies agree that building more housing in existing residential areas is one of the most effective ways to reduce emissions. By implementing smart reforms that enable transit-oriented development, legalize smaller homes, and lower parking requirements, cities and towns across the state have the power to act—but they must respond with the urgency and commitment that this crisis demands.
