Beacon Point Area Raymark Cleanup

Work Begins on Monday, November 28th

State Representative Joe Gresko on Friday sent an email to the Stratford Crier informing us that work will begin in the Beacon Point Area on Monday, November 28th.

In conjunction with the Town of Stratford Health Department, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be removing Raymark waste from the upper community parking lot of the Birdseye Marine Complex, the adjacent recreational dock, a large grassy area which spans Birdseye Street and the Tide Harbor Condominiums, and a small area along Beacon Point Road across from the treatment plant.

Raymark Waste is mixture of manufacturing biproducts buried in soil containing varying levels of chemicals including asbestos, lead, copper and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The waste poses no risk when buried, however exposure can happen over time whether because of man-made disruptions or ground surface erosions.

A hybrid meeting of the Raymark Community Advisory Group will be held on Wednesday, November 30th from 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. Those wishing to attend online can do so by going to the EPA’s Town’s Facebook Page.

For more information on the project, including upcoming virtual public meeting dates, visit the EPA’s website, the EPA’s Raymark Facebook page, or the Town’s Facebook Page.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me at the Capitol at 860-842-0363 or email me at Joseph.Gresko@cga.ct.gov.

Shop Small Stratford Returns for the 2022 Holiday Season

Saturday, November 26th

The Town of Stratford is once again inviting residents to support small businesses as the Shop Small Stratford campaign kicks-off the holiday shopping season. Mayor Laura R. Hoydick has issued a proclamation declaring Saturday, November 26th – the Saturday after Thanksgiving – “Shop Small Stratford Day” in conjunction with the national program, Small Business Saturday.

Mellow Monkey, a Stratford based, award winning boutique is spearheading the campaign with support from The Stratford Department of Economic and Community Development and The Milford Bank.

According to the proclamation, “small businesses have significant impacts when they are supported and that includes boosting the economy, creating a variety of jobs, contributing to the local community, and enhancing cultural vitality.” Further, “shopping small means directly supporting another member of the community and that is what strengthens our Town, both socially and financially.”

The annual, one-day event capitalizes on Small Business Saturday which is nationally sponsored by American Express. According to the Small Business Administration, of the new jobs created between 1995 and 2020, small businesses accounted for 62% – 12.7 million compared to 7.9 million by large enterprises.

State Representative Joe Gresko, (D)
121st Connecticut House District

Dear Neighbor,

November 26 is Small Business Saturday – a day to support small businesses and show how much we appreciate the entrepreneurs that make up the fabric of our vibrant communities.

As they work to recover from the devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic, our patronage will help them not only recover, but prosper so they may in turn continue to contribute to the local and state economy.

To help those already in business or those working to start one, Business.CT.gov provides services for registering and managing compliance needs. The portal aims to encourage entrepreneurship and business growth while working to reduce some of the risk that comes with starting a business.

Our small businesses are at the heart of our communities. This holiday season, find a gift for everyone on your list and let’s keep the holiday spirit of giving alive by shopping, eating, and celebrating locally.

Special Session on Gas Tax

State Representative Ben McGorty, (R)
122nd Connecticut House District

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Dating back to March, House and Senate Republicans have called for a permanent end to the state gas tax and a similar cut to the diesel tax. Additionally, we’ve called to stop a new tax on trucks from being implemented on January 1st, 2023.

After considering our proposals, the majority opted to keep the tax on diesel, go through with a new tax on trucks, and settled for a temporary suspension to the gas tax to expire on December 1st.

Now, three weeks following an election, we are convening in a special session to extend the suspension of the state gas tax. This is a necessary step to fight rising fuel costs, but we must push to do more. You can follow the session live on the web.

The General assembly will convene for a special session on Monday, November 28th at 12:00 p.m.

Electricity Rates Increasing.

On Thursday of last week, Eversource and United Illuminating announced increases to electricity costs for ratepayers – nearly double what they paid one year ago.

The timing of this unwelcome announcement could not be worse for ratepayers, amidst skyrocketing costs of home heating oil, other utilities, and groceries, especially with the holidays approaching.

Many international and domestic factors affect the cost of energy in Connecticut, but we will ensure that in special session on Monday that we are doing everything possible as state legislators to bring financial relief to you and your families and find meaningful long-term solutions to lower costs.

Please do not hesitate to reach me regarding any state issues,

Bivalent Booster Facts

The FDA authorized both the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech bivalent boosters. The bivalent boosters combine the original vaccine with protection against the newest omicron versions to increase cross-protection against multiple COVID-19 variants. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) met and issued the below recommendation:

-Individuals 18 years of age and older are eligible for a single booster dose of the Moderna bivalent COVID-19 vaccine if it has been at least two months since they completed primary vaccination or received the most recent booster dose.

-Individuals 12 years of age and older are eligible for a single booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNtech bivalent COVID-19 vaccine if it has been at least two months since they have completed primary vaccination or have received the most recent booster dose.

CDC Recommends Moderna for those Aged 6-17

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) endorsed  the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) recommendation that Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine be used as an option for children ages 6 through 17 years, in addition to its already recommended use in children 6 months through 5 years and adults 18 years and older. The ACIP recommendation comes after a thorough review of the scientific evidence demonstrating safety and efficacy and supports the use of the vaccine among those 6 through 17 years of age. CDC recommends that Moderna COVID-19 vaccine be used for individuals 6 through 17 years of age to better protect them from COVID-19.

COVID-19 Vaccine Update

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted to recommend children 6 months through 5 years of age receive a COVID-19 vaccine. The CDC now recommends that all children 6 months through 5 years of age receive either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to better protect them from COVID-19.

All children, including those who have already had COVID-19, should get vaccinated. Although most children have only mild symptoms when infected, COVID-19 can cause some children to become very sick, even to the point of requiring hospitalization or even death.

The approval of COVID-19 vaccines for children as young as 6-months old is another major step forward in the overall COVID-19 vaccine roll-out. Parents have many options for where to get a COVID-19 vaccine for their child including:

Pediatricians’ offices: Hundreds of pediatricians will be administering COVID-19 vaccines across Connecticut.

Pharmacies: There will be hundreds of pharmacy locations that offer the COVID-19 vaccine to children. Pharmacies provide a safe, convenient, and easy location to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

DPH Yellow Van Clinics: The updated clinic schedule can be found at ct.gov/coronavirus
