Project 2025 is a proposal to reinvent our government. While Donald Trump has distanced himself from the plan, it was written by his close associates. This is part of our series intended to provide food for thought, and highlights how the plan would affect our lives.
Immigration and You
Where do your folks come from?
Most of us have relatives who were immigrants – some recently and others generations ago. Project 2025 advocates immigration policies like tightening our borders, with these potentially dire consequences:
- Revising the visa system to allow in only the “best and brightest”, plus mass deportations of people who work essential jobs means less and higher priced produce in our markets, and more expensive burgers on your grill. [page 145]
- Repealing the “Temporary Protected Status”, which would mean you’d lose people and businesses you’ve come to rely on, from landscapers to bakeries to favorite neighborhood restaurants. [page 145 and 150]
- The cost of living in general is likely to skyrocket with a large loss of the immigrant labor force. In addition, we’d lose the higher state and local taxes undocumented immigrants pay when they don’t even have access to the benefits that are available to us.
- And by the way, the fear factor of immigrant crime is false. Numerous studies show that there is no direct connection between immigrants and increased crime. [Northwestern Now (Northwestern University), Brennan Center for Justice, and Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research to name a few]
