Let’s Hear From Our Reporters!
This month at the Stratford Library Kids Reporters Club, we asked our student readers to choose from a really big list, books that every kid should read. The reporters thought these books should be fun, include humor, and perhaps include some unbelievable elements, like Jack finding a giant beanstalk. When you are finished reading these types of books, you might feel amazed, excited, or wish to read the book again.
Check out the lists that meet this very high standard and see which of the titles you/your children have read, and maybe choose to read some of the books every kid should read.
Joseph’s list of books that Every Child Should Read:
Two-Headed Chicken by Tom Angleberger
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin
The Adventures of Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey
The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss
How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss
Scaredy Squirrel by Mélanie Watt
Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems
Elephant and Piggie by Mo Willems
The Dot by Peter Reynolds
The Gingerbread Man by various authors
Joseph’s top two from the list
Scaredy Squirrel by Mélanie Watt. Scaredy Squirrel is a squirrel who is afraid of almost everything. He is always a funny character. He recommends that the reader avoid many things because he is scared of them. One of these things Scaredy Squirrel says is to wash your hands before reading the book – funny from the very first page!
The Adventures of Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey. George and Harold make comics about Captain Underpants, but when they go to school, their principal is the meanest ever and a worthy opponent to Captain Underpants. Things get even wackier when George gets a hypnotizing ring that lets him brain-control the principal, Mr. Krupp. It is a silly book, including some pictures so silly we can’t even describe them here. (See page 63 for an example.)

Dougie’s top two from the list
Two-Headed Chicken by Tom Angleberger. This is one of my top books because it’s about a two-headed chicken, and someone is trying to chase it around the universe and catch it. There is something surprising on every page, including a person who is trying to eat THIS BOOK with a ginormous tooth (a mistake).
How the Grinch Stole Christmas. When the Grinch was growing up, he liked Christmas, but when he was older, he didn’t. Then he tries to steal Christmas so no one else can have gifts or enjoy it. Dougie recommends this book because his mom read it to him, and because the Grinch is so sneaky, and because of the dog Max.
