Letter to the Editor
I read Chris Powell’s article that stated “Dems get hysterical” when Trump “proclaimed the obvious” about mental illness which makes our cities unsafe. Given the pandemic of mass shootings in many cities, and towns across the US, very often by the mentally impaired, where is the executive order to strengthen universal background checks? At this point, shouldn’t every American be “hysterical” over senseless mass shootings?
The recent budget bill funded ICE with $150 billion to defend the border, build confinement camps and hire perhaps 500,000 ICE agents for $50 billion. We were told that the roundup of illegal immigrants was to focus on murderers, rapists and other felons, not those who pick our crops, clean hotel rooms, and care for the aged? How many judges could be hired for $50 billion to provide “due process” to resolve the illegals expeditiously. And who among us is not a descendent of an immigrant?
Instead, we have masked agents with no form of personal identification who arrive in unmarked cars and terrorize families. Shouldn’t we all be “hysterical” with this policy? And let’s not forget that we would not be here today if the bipartisan Senate Bill S.744 in 2013, which overwhelmingly passed 68 to 32 and addressed Border Security and Immigration Modernization, was never even called for a vote by the then Republican Speaker of the House where the bill died
Finally, how many “unhoused individuals” could be settled for $50 billion? Mr. Powell’s focus on affordable housing as a solution will take years to help resolve the homeless crisis. Aren’t there better ways to resolve these issues with proper funding? All Americans should be hysterical with the direction of this country.
