Friends,
With our federal government now ground to a halt and a president seemingly hellbent on declaring open war on the American people and our democracy, it may seem an odd moment for a profile on bipartisanship leadership. I was honored this week to be named a 2025 Public Official of the Year by Governing Magazine, which states: “Connecticut’s AG Is a Fighter Who Punches Way Above His Weight. Democratic Attorney General William Tong has earned bipartisan admiration from his peers even as he takes on the Trump administration and major corporate interests.”
I think you all know by now that I don’t pull any punches. By the end of today, I’ll have sued Donald Trump 35 times in the first year of his second administration alone. We’re fighting, and we’re racking up major wins in courts across the country. On Revolution Wind, on lawless immigration enforcement demands on our local law enforcement, on birthright citizenship (yes, despite what the Supreme Court said about nationwide injunctions, we immediately got a new injunction preserving that bedrock constitutional principle), and over hundreds of millions of dollars in grants that Trump tried to take from Connecticut but we have stopped him. And I won’t lose any sleep if that puts me at odds with my Republican colleagues. When it comes to protecting Connecticut families and defending our democracy, there’s just no choice.
But we have to leave the light on. Yes, even right now when the prospect of bipartisanship seems bleaker than ever. For the future of our country and a safe future for our kids, we need Republicans to wake up and do the right thing. I’ve said this over and over, we need Republicans in this fight, to stand up to Donald Trump and tell him that what he is doing is destroying this country and hurting our families. Republicans need to wake up tomorrow and admit that their emperor has no clothes. And for that to happen, we have to keep talking.
So that’s what I do. Where I can find common ground, on issues of consumer protection, on stopping the opioid epidemic and taking on the addiction industry, on taking on Big Tech and social media giants, attorneys general can and still do work together every day and we are scoring big wins for our states.
But let me be clear. Bipartisanship does not mean that we ever, ever give an inch on our core principles. I will never compromise when it comes to protecting Connecticut families—including our immigrant families and LGTBQ+ families, when it comes to protecting reproductive freedom, when it comes to stopping gun violence, defending our climate, and preserving our free and fair elections and the peaceful transfer of power.
Now more than ever, we need to support our local and state officials who understand that when the federal government fails, when our Republican colleagues fail to meet the moment, Democrats must lead. Connecticut must lead. Right now, we need to support our local and state Democratic officials who are leading by example, who understand that Connecticut must never give up, never surrender, and never back down.
