Fall is upon us,
and I begin to wonder,
Will the change be as slow and patient as the leaves?
Shades of green will soon transform into hues of yellow and orange,
a signal of the aroma of pumpkin spice and the crisp coolness of a passing breeze.
A jacket snuggled around our torso, still open and inviting,
It is not winter’s time.
Fall is upon us,
and I wonder,
Will the change be as rapid and abrupt as an over-ripening banana?
Will the days grow dark and interminable, a lingering bitterness in the air?
A dullness similar to the sable blackness
overtaking what was once a vibrant yellow on the now lifeless fruit,
a dreadful goodbye to our golden sun.
Fall is upon us,
and I stop wondering
how change will present itself.
I halt my attempt to unravel this season’s gift,
because good or bad—
It’s a gift.
To watch the autumn leaves turn,
to feel the tickle of the wind on our half-covered collarbones,
scarf wrapped too loosely,
a protracted sickness on its way.
To be snuggled by a warm jacket,
to spend our lengthy days together,
to say goodbye to our sun’s gold, knowing it will return.
It’s a gift,
to wonder.
Fall is upon us.
