Stratford, CT — In a historic move, both the Stratford Police Union Local 407 and the Stratford Professional Firefighters, IAFF Local 998 have endorsed Dr. David Chess for Mayor. This joint endorsement marks the first time in over fifteen years that both public safety unions have stood together to back a candidate — a reflection of what they describe as years of retaliation, low morale, and failed leadership under Mayor Laura Hoydick.
Officer Tony Zona, President of the Stratford Police Union, said that Dr. Chess’s endorsement came after a fair and democratic vote among officers. “Eighty officers voted. Dr. Chess received 46, Mayor Hoydick just 5,” Zona said. “The neutral votes were those who don’t want to be involved in politics and those who fear retaliation from the Hoydick administration.“
Firefighters have shared similar stories. Their union cited a deep erosion of trust following the firing of two respected firefighters earlier this year, actions they describe as “politically motivated and punitive.” Union leaders said these dismissals sent shockwaves through the department and were emblematic of a mayor who “rules through intimidation instead of leadership.”
“Stratford’s firefighters and police officers share the same mission – to protect lives and serve our community with honor.” said Steven Micahlovic, President of Stratford Professional Firefighters, IAFF Local 998. “But we’ve been treated with contempt instead of respect. We’ve watched colleagues pushed out, punished, and ignored. It’s time for leadership that values those who protect Stratford every day.”
Both unions highlighted the heavy toll of high turnover, citing the millions lost due to constant rehiring, training, and burnout. The Police Union estimates more than $8 million in taxpayer funds have been wasted on turnover during Hoydick’s tenure.
The final straw for many came after the death of Officer Ken Kubel in June 2024, when Mayor Hoydick skipped his funeral to attend a routine meeting. “While other mayors came to honor one of our own, she didn’t show up. That moment told us everything,” Zona said.
Dr. Chess said he was deeply honored to receive the endorsement of both unions. “These men and women put their lives on the line for Stratford,” Chess said. “They deserve respect, partnership, and a mayor who listens. I will always stand with those who protect our community.”
Both unions emphasized that their endorsements are not about politics but about restoring integrity, morale, and respect for public safety. “Stratford deserves leadership that supports those who serve,” Zona said. “That’s why we’re standing with Dr. Chess.”
