A Family Affair
Stratford Veterans Museum
John Lindberg came from a large Stratford family, and in fact, his enlistment in the United States Navy was following in the footsteps of his three older brothers who served in the US Navy in WW2.
He enlisted in the USN upon high school graduation and was stationed in Company 67 for Boot Camp in Bainbridge, MD. With his athletic prowess, he was a natural to became a “frogman”, a member of the elite underwater demolition team. This “frogman” had in high school demonstrated exceptional swimming ability, which included plunging off of the Devon Bridge into the Housatonic River.
He was a a quartermaster, and during the Korean War served on the USS Botetourt (APA 136), where his team supported USMC combat operations in the Inchon area.
When he returned stateside, John pitched on the USN baseball team. In a game against the Army, he struck out a young Army player by the name of Willie Mays…THE Willie Mays, considered one of the all-time greats of baseball.
At 94 years of age, John is a proud member and supporter of VFW Post 9460, as well as the Stratford Veterans Museum.
