Letters from D-Day

June 6th marked the 80th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy and the beginning of the liberation of France and the rest of Europe from Germany, and the final defeat of the Nazis. Troops were given a copy of a letter from General Dwight Eisenhower, the leader of the Allied forces, in which he wrote to all the troops announcing the commencement of the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. June 6, 1944.

There was also a letter is from President Franklin D. Roosevelt , a bit earlier than Eisenhower’s, to the members of the Allied expeditionary force. This June 6 and beyond please let us remember those members of our military and those of our allies who helped to defeat Nazi Germany.

Both these letters were copied from the original hard copies saved by Sergeant Edward Mudre, Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient who served in Europe during WWII. They were shared with the museum by his daughter, Gail Voytek, who serves as the secretary on the museum’s board of directors.
