For the past two weeks, rumors have surfaced on social media and “coffee talks” in diners and business establishments that Pistey Funeral Home was shutting its doors and going out of business.

We called Cindy Pistey to verify the rumors, and this is her response:

“We are not going out of business as Pistey Funeral Home. It is true that the property is under contract pending a sale to the Town of Stratford. The trend in the funeral business is to pool resources. Funerals and calling hours are on the decline. Why support six buildings when working together and operating as one is more efficient and enables better service. We will be working with Dennis & D’Arcy Funeral Home and the Abriola & Kelemen Funeral Homes of Stratford.”

Cindy noted that Pistey’s has operated as a funeral home since 1898 in four different locations. They have been at their Main and West Broad location for 40 years, and she felt that she “should go with the times”.

“I’m a senior, and I did not want to retire and did not want to see the property sold to a developer. The Town of Stratford needed to expand the library, and, as we are next door it was a logical move. I believe the town will be a ‘good steward’ for the property.”
