STRATFORD, CT — The Stratford Animal Rescue Society (STARS) is asking for the community’s help to provide life-changing medical care for Opal, a senior dog who was recently found roaming and suffering from years of severe neglect.
Estimated to be over 10 years old, Opal arrived in the care of Stratford Animal Care & Control with multiple serious medical conditions that had gone untreated for years. Veterinary examinations revealed severe dental disease-causing significant pain, multiple mammary tumors requiring surgical removal and biopsy, and the fact that she had never been spayed.
Perhaps most heartbreaking is the condition of Opal’s ears. Chronic, untreated ear infections over many years caused extensive and irreversible damage. Specialists have determined that the aggressive surgical procedures sometimes used to address such conditions are not recommended due to Opal’s age and the risks associated with recovery.
Despite the neglect she endured, Opal remains gentle, affectionate, and trusting.
Veterinarians have recommended a treatment plan that begins with senior bloodwork, followed by surgery to spay Opal, remove her mammary tumors for biopsy, and perform a comprehensive dental procedure with necessary extractions to relieve her chronic pain and infection.
“Opal’s condition is a stark reminder of what can happen when animals do not receive even basic veterinary care,” said representatives of STARS. “While we cannot change what happened to her in the past, we can make sure her future is filled with comfort, dignity, and love. She deserves the opportunity to live her remaining years free from pain.”
STARS is seeking donations to help cover the cost of Opal’s medical treatment. Every contribution, regardless of size, will go directly toward her veterinary care and recovery.
