Dear Reader,
I had the opportunity to sit down with our columnist Norah Christianson, who writes Notes from Beyond the Pale, and get to know the woman behind the column. I must admit, I was fascinated by her life story, which includes raising her children in Stratford and living in her home for over fifty years. Norah even shared with me that she’s 85-years-old. I shared with her how much I am in awe of her words and her understanding of the world around her. In this week’s essay, Born to Adorn, Norah further explores something we discussed when we met – fashion and heaven.
I also had the opportunity to attend the Stratford Democratic Town Committee meeting on Thursday. It was a packed house (church, actually, as the meeting was held at the Unitarian Universalist Church) and an overflowing parking lot, filled with neighbors there to nominate, endorse, and explain why their Stratford neighbor should be the nominee.
With so many familiar names on various slates, I’d like to congratulate all of the candidates, and have the opportunity to interview the three (now four) Democratic Board of Education candidates to learn more about who they are and their vision for what the Board of Education can be, for both teachers and students alike.
In our issue this week, we get to celebrate students from Stratford and Bunnell High Schools who were awarded Stratford Rotary Club scholarships. Barbara Heimlich, our Features Reporter and also a Rotarian, was present at the ceremony to hear their impressive stories and heartfelt dreams as they pursue their endeavors, following their 2025 graduation.
I hope you will spend some time reading about the Lordship house, the rejection of the 129-apartment development proposal on the North End, and the thoughts of Adrian Frandle in his Poetry Lounge #4 piece this week: “Poetry is funny like that, it has a way of suddenly appearing, and never in the guise you’d planned for it.”
I hope you get outside this week to see what appears – perhaps comforted by something familiar that you expect to see, or maybe pleasantly surprised by finding something new.
