While William Shakespeare has no personal connection to our beloved bucolic town of Stratford, CT, Shakespeare was born in Stratford (Stratford-upon-Avon in England that is) in 1564. His exact birth date is believed to be on April 23, 1564, but has never been confirmed. Traditionally, however, baptisms took place three days after a baby’s birth. Records show that on April 26, 1564, William Shakespeare was baptised.
This weekend we will celebrate Shakespeare’s life and legacy on Paradise Green. in a festive celebration hosted by Stratfords of the World, an international nonprofit with a mission focused on building friendship by promoting culture, community, and a shared appreciation of William Shakespeare.
On Sunday, April 26th, you’re invited to watch, hear, and participate in honoring Shakespeare’s legacy, with neighbors and friends alike. From 2pm-4pm come and celebrate The Bard’s Birthday with song, vignettes, sonnets, and more. Local actors will perform on the sidewalk along the 3500 block of the Green. Come and witness a few thespians bring Shakespeare’s work to life: Tyler Bunch, Marca Leigh, Katie Sparer, Sage Sperling, and Erin Williams.
There is truly something special about Stratford (Stratford, CT especially). Every two years, the Stratfords of the World hold a reunion. As a hosting Stratford, the commitment from residents is that housing for delegates is provided, along with education about the culture and history of their region.
Did you know there are six regions around the world named ‘Stratford’?
Our local Stratfords of the World began in 1984 when the Connecticut Stratford High School band visited Stratford, Ontario. Since then, it has grown into an international network of six Stratfords:
1. Stratford, Connecticut, USA
2. Stratford, Victoria, Australia
3. Stratford, Ontario, Canada
4. Stratford, Prince Edward Island, Canada
5. Stratford, Taranaki, New Zealand
6. Stratford-upon-Avon, England
Be sure not to miss the next Stratfords of the World reunion to be held in Prince Edward Island, Canada, September 22–28, 2027. In 2029, Stratford, Connecticut’ s Stratfords of the World members will host the five other regions right here at home. With the recent resurrection (of sorts) of the grounds which once held the Shakespeare Theater, I certainly hope, by the time SOW hosts their reunion in 2029 the grounds are fit for a king.
