Legislative Update

Kaitlyn Shake
State Representative 120th District

Dear Neighbor,

The 2025 Legislative Session has begun and my colleagues and I have gotten to work on our committees. One thing that makes our work better is when we get feedback from you. If you are a resident of Stratford’s 120th District, complete my brief survey online below.

2024 Legislative Survey

Committee Work

Over the past week, we have started to meet in our committees. I am excited to get to work on my several key committee assignments, including on the Labor and Public Employees Committee. As a member of these committees, I want to advocate for everyone and ensure your voice is heard. I look forward to sharing the work we are doing and the ways you can be involved.

United Illuminating Public Comment Hearing

I want to make you all aware that United Illuminating has submitted a “Rate Case” to the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) to amend its rate schedules and address what they say is a $105 million operating deficiency for their upcoming rate year.

According to United Illuminating, this amendment would mean the average residential customer using 700 KW per month would see an increase of about $24.64 to their monthly bill.

They are claiming that the operating deficit is driven by structural deficiencies in previous rate settings, unrecovered costs, increasing operational costs, and environmental remediation expenses.

As part of the application process, there will be three public comment hearings where you can make your voice heard:

  • Monday, January 27 @ 5:30PM – Margaret Morton Government Center, 999 Broad Street, Bridgeport, CT 06604
  • Monday, March 10 @ 5:30PM – Fairfield Public Library, 1080 Old Post Road, Fairfield, CT 06824
  • Tuesday, March 18 @ 12PM – REMOTE ACCESS: Meeting Registration – Zoom

If you want to read UI’s full application, click here.
The application includes detailed testimony and exhibits from various panels covering:

  • Regulatory policy
  • Electric operations
  • Capital investment
  • Revenue requirements
  • Compensation and benefits
  • Customer service
  • Environmental remediation
  • Cost of capital
  • Sales and revenue forecast
  • Allocated cost of service
  • Rate design
  • I hope you’ll take the opportunity to attend one of these meetings and speak your mind on this proposed rate change. The more specific you are able to be in your testimony the more helpful it will be.
  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • A day off is a day on…
As we approach Martin Luther King Jr. Day, let’s take a moment to reflect on the extraordinary legacy of a leader whose vision of justice, equality, and nonviolent resistance transformed our nation and inspired the world. Dr. King’s unwavering commitment to civil rights reminds us of the power of courage, compassion, and collective action to create meaningful change. Let us honor his memory by recommitting ourselves to the pursuit of equity, inclusion, and unity in our communities.
  • Law Enforcement Appreciation Day
  • Last week we celebrated Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. On this day, we honor the brave officers who protect our communities. We honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, including our Stratford Police Department. Their courage and dedication is appreciated every day and will never be forgotten.

Toll Scam Texts

I want to make sure all of you stay safe and informed! A new scam is circulating where fraudsters are sending text messages claiming you have an unpaid toll and asking for payment. Please DO NOT click any links or provide any personal information.

Here are some tips from the FBI:
⚠️If you receive one of these messages, file a complaint with the IC3, www.ic3.gov. Include where the number of the originating text came from, and the website from which the number was generated.

⚠️Delete any scam texts received.

⚠️If you clicked any link or provided your information, take efforts to secure your personal information and financial accounts. Dispute any unfamiliar charges.
⚠️Always verify any toll-related charges directly through official state websites or customer service.

Stay vigilant and share this message with your friends and family to help protect our community!
Department of Social Services

Local Events
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of peaceful resistance
and the pursuit of equity and justice, the Sterling Community Center, in partnership with the Town of Stratford and the Stratford Board of Education, is hosting a special event on Monday, January 20th, from 9:00 am to noon at The Baldwin Center. This community event will feature a morning of engaging workshops that explore the power of art and creative expression in advancing Dr. King’s message and legacy. Find more information and event registration here.

Yours in service,

Kaitlyn Shake
