Letter From The Editor

Share

We are two days away from welcoming in July, can you believe it? With Pride Month coming to a close, and as we round the bend to celebrate our 249th Day of Independence from Great Britain on July 4th (along with fireworks at Short Beach on July 2nd), I hope you will take some time to reflect on the freedoms we have, and perhaps even consider some you’d like to get into ‘good trouble’ fighting for today.

Did you know about Stratford’s own Declaration of Independence? Take a trip down memory lane and learn a bit about our local history, thanks to our town historian, David Wright, and read his article Stratford’s Path to the Declaration of Independence.

Did you know that the 4th of July is one of the busiest days of the year for firefighters? We don’t advocate home fireworks, but if you use them, please be aware of how dangerous they can be—even innocent-seeming sparklers can cause severe burns on contact due to their extremely high temperatures.

Speaking of firefighters, you may know that two long-time Stratford firefighters, who were injured on the job and are on medical leave, were terminated earlier this month by Mayor Hoydick. Our Features Reporter Barbara Heimlich’s article, which will appear in next week’s issue, will delve deeper into this story.

There is an open opportunity, from the Board of Education, to join one of Superintendent Heather Borges’s upcoming “Conversations & Coffee” events in July and/or August. You can reserve your spot or walk-in.

We welcome Kimberly Santana, a rising 11th grader at Bunnell High School as our photography and social media support. We have much to celebrate here at the Stratford Crier, what (or who) will you celebrate this week?

Are you looking to get out today and enjoy our beautiful weather? Check out the Stratford Historical Society’s Pollinator Day Event from 10am-2pm. Registration can be done online, and visit their announcement to learn more about the schedule.
