William Samuel Johnson Day
Saturday October 7th

Various activities between 10:00 am and 4:30 pm

It’s unlikely that any father-son combination has had more influence on America than Stratford locals, Samuel and William Samuel Johnson. Please join us as we celebrate their October birthdays and learn more about their contributions to the developing nation, from Samuel’s role in colonial educational opportunities and religious diversity to William Samuel’s involvement in the Revolution and writing of the U. S. Constitution.

 

 

Self-guided Tours of Christ Church Burying Grounds
Visit Samuel and William Samuel’s gravesites, take a photo at Columbia University’s commemorative gate, and discover other early Stratfordites.
10:30 a.m. Celebration of William Samuel Johnson’s Birthday
by Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard
The ceremony takes place in the cemetery.
Followed by a reception and flag raising at Stratford Historical Society’s Catharine B. Mitchell Museum
Noon – 1:00 p.m. Sounds of the Past
Ginny Reinhard shares her memories of her father’s work to refurbish the pianoforte that entertained members of the Johnson family at gatherings. Learn the history of the instrument and how it came to adorn the Judson House parlor while you listen to Ginny play a piece or two.
3:00 – 4:30 p.m. Wine with William (registration required)
Convene with William Samuel Johnson, Stratford-born U. S. Founding Father, for an afternoon of drinks and merriment. Discover Johnson’s favorite drinks and some of his contributions to the young nation while you enjoy cheese and wine from Traveling Vineyards. Sample five wines, three of which were prevalent in English taverns in the mid-1700s when William Samuel Johnson visited England.
