Veteran of the Month: Ed Dean
Ed Dean, born May 31, 1932 would have been 91 years old this year. Ed spent his formative years in Bridgeport before the Army drafted him in 1952. His service started with basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. It was there that fellow recruit and future Major League Baseball player, Faye Throneberry, convinced Ed to join the camp’s baseball team.
Ed was deployed to Okinawa, Japan where he was put in charge of a data processing night shift. Faye Thorneberry went on to play for the Boston Red Sox, Washington Senators and Los Angeles Angels. Ed has many fond memories playing championship baseball with his Army buddies stateside and abroad.
Having reached the rank of Corporal, Ed returned to the United States, where he was in the Army Reserves for another six years. During this time, he continued his data processing career with GE first in Bridgeport. Ed was promoted to a position in New Jersey, where he met his wife Cathy, of 63 years. The next promotion brought Ed and Cathy back to Connecticut. They eventually settled in Stratford to raise their three children, Mary, Edward and Deborah.
Up until Ed’s passing on April 7, 2022, he enjoyed spending time cheering on the New York Yankees and Lady Huskies, solving crossword puzzles and keeping up with his five grandchildren.

Our mission is to design, build and furnish a museum that will honor veterans from Stratford who have served our country honorably in war and in peace. The museum will be geared to accommodate school children to foster their appreciation of our veterans.

The Stratford Veterans Museum is dedicated to telling the stories of the town’s men and women who have served their country through the Armed Forces. Part of the way that story will be told is through a series of displays in the museum, including a “core” exhibit that takes visitors from the Revolutionary War through today’s conflicts. These exhibits will give the visitor a history of the era as well as items that are centric to Stratford. This tour will be available to visitors supporting audio and visual materials by downloading Otocast from your app store.
Visiting Hours:
Wednesday: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sunday: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
