Cold temperatures and gusty winds couldn’t dampen the spirits of the ALS United Connecticut community as hundreds of participants came out in force to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Walk ALS Westport on October 17th at Sherwood Island State Park. Despite the chilly conditions, individuals living with ALS, families, friends, caregivers, and supports gathered for this milestone event, united in their commitment to raising awareness, honoring those affected by ALS, and supporting the mission to end ALS.

Nearly 50 teams and 425 registered participants took part in Walk ALS Westport for a morning of hope, remembrance and community. Together, participants and supporters raised over $185,000 to help ALS United Connecticut provide critical care services, equipment, transportation, support programs and other resources to people living with ALS and their families, while also supporting ALS research.
ALS United Connecticut board member Judd McArthur welcomed the crowd and thanked the volunteers, board members, sponsors, and ALS United CT staff for their efforts and contributions in making this happen, and thanked the crowd in attendance for coming together to support finding a cure for ALS.

ALS United CT Executive Director Jacky Rose then reflected on the importance of Walk ALS in bringing the community together and reminding families that they do not have to face ALS alone. Special remarks were also shared by Dr. Kevin Felice, Medical Director Research, Neuromuscular Center at Hospital for Special Care, which is also Walk ALS presenting sponsor. In addition, Congressman Jim Himes, United States Representative (CT-4), spoke to the crowd in attendance.
Adding to the day’s memorable moments, Ron Lumpkin, a member of our ALS community living with the disease, had the honor of cutting the ribbon to officially start the walk. Participants then rolled and strolled around Sherwood Island State Park, coming together in support of everyone whose life has been touched by ALS.
“For 25 years, Sherwood Island has been a place where our community comes together for Walk ALS Westport, united by a shared commitment to supporting people and families affected by ALS,” said Rose. “The love, strength, and hope that bring everyone together year after year are what make this event so powerful. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has walked, donated, volunteered, and stood with our ALS community over the past 25 years. Your continued support makes a real difference in the lives of families across Connecticut.”

Walk ALS is ALS United Connecticut’s largest annual fundraising event, but the day is about much more than fundraising. It is an opportunity to celebrate time with loved ones, and stand alongside the individuals, families and caregivers who continue to face the disease every day. The walk route is lined with pictures in memory of many of those who have been lost to ALS. It’s a touching and inspiring experience.
Leading up to Walk ALS Westport, ALS United CT hosted two successful events, Walk ALS Hartford on Sept. 26th and Walk ALS New Haven on Oct. 4th.
Although the walks for 2026 are in the books, people can still learn more about ALS United CT and donate by visiting ALSUnitedCT.org/Walk. ALS United CT is still accepting Walk ALS donations through the end of the year.
