September was a tough month for the Stratford Animal Shelter. Our doors were open to every stray in need — and sadly, there were many. We took in several sick and injured animals who required urgent, life-saving veterinary care. Among them were two unrelated dogs suffering from heartworm — a painful and entirely preventable disease — along with other strays needing surgeries, antibiotics, and intensive treatment.
The care they received gave them a second chance at life, but it also left us with over $11,000 in veterinary bills. As a small shelter that relies on community support, this unexpected expense has put a heavy strain on our ability to continue helping the animals who need us most.

Tahoe’s Story: From Fear to Hope
When the Stratford Animal Shelter got the call, no one knew what to expect. A worker at a local yard had spotted a frightened dog hiding under a boat trailer — too scared to move, too weak to run. When our team arrived, they found a German Shepherd cowering in the dirt, trembling, his eyes filled with fear and pain.
We named him Tahoe.
It was clear he had been on his own for far too long. His beautiful coat was severely matted and filthy, tangled with debris and ticks. The smell of neglect hung heavy. Underneath all that fur, his body was thin, sore, and infected. A vet exam revealed a painful urinary tract infection, multiple tick-borne diseases, and heartworm — a dangerous and entirely preventable condition that will require months of expensive treatment to heal.
Despite all he’s endured, Tahoe’s spirit is remarkable. When he looks at you now, there’s a quiet trust beginning to return — a spark of hope that says he’s ready to believe in kindness again. With proper medical care, love, and time, Tahoe will know what it means to feel safe, healthy, and loved.
But he can’t do it alone. His recovery will take months of heartworm treatment, medication, and ongoing veterinary visits. The costs are significant, and we’re asking our community to come together to help us give Tahoe the future he deserves.
