The Stratford Library and Square One Theatre Company have announced the schedule for Readers Theatre Summer Showcase 2023.  The annual series of live, staged readings of new and established plays will begin on Thursday, June 8th and continue on six consecutive Thursday evenings through July 27th.  The theatre readings are free and open to the public.

“America’s Sexiest Couple”, Ken Levine’s comedy about stars of a popular ‘90s sitcom who reunite for the first time in 25 years, will kick-off the series on June 8th at 7 p.m. In “America’s Sexiest Couple” the stars face a lifetime of unresolved issues, longings, resentments and regrets.  Plus, the network wants to reboot the show that made them stars. Career and personal aspirations collide, professionally and personally, where do they go from here?  For the Library reading, the sitcom stars will be played by Square One favorites Peggy Nelson and Pat Leo with Tyler Small.

Other play selections in the series are:

  • “A Teachable Moment”, a series of original one-act plays by local authors Stuart Brown and Jen Ju on June 22nd,
  • John Kaasik’s twisty thriller, “Stranger in the Attic” (June 29ty),
  • “Pie in the Sky”, a bittersweet comedy by Laurence Thelen (July 6th)
  • Larissa Fasthorse’s wickedly funny satire about holiday wokeness, “The Thanksgiving Play” (July 13th)
  • and a new drama set in a contemporary high school by Stratford playwright and educator Damian Long, “Best Practices” (July 27th).

The Readers Theatre Summer Showcase 2023 series will be held in the Stratford Library’s air-conditioned Lovell Room at 7 p.m. each evening. The acting company for the theatre series includes Julia Allen, Bruce Murray, Céline Montaudy, Mary Ellen Maloney, Sam Mink, Jim Buffone, CJ Nolan, Victoria Blake, Kiel Stango, David Victor, Lillian Garcia, Danielle Sultini and Janet Rathert.  Square One Theatre Artistic Director Tom Holehan will direct the readings.

All plays are recommended for adult audiences and titles are subject to change. The readings are free and reservations will not be accepted.  Doors open at 6:30 pm for general seating only, first-come, first-served.
