Update from State Rep. Kaitlyn Shake

Share

I had a busy week at the capitol in my committee meetings and working with my colleagues on proposed bills and concepts. Many committees review bill concepts as part of the beginning stage of the legislative process. On Labor & Public Employees, Public Safety & Security and Human Services, we passed critical concepts that will move to public hearings over the next several weeks where your input and contribution is important! I’m excited to continue our work together and will keep you up to date as the session continues.

CT Nonprofit Alliance Legislative Forum

On Wednesday, I visited Marrakech in West Haven, where I had the opportunity to listen and engage in meaningful conversations at the CT Nonprofit Alliance Legislative Forum. It was wonderful to hear from passionate local advocates and answer questions about the issues that matter most to our nonprofit leaders

Maternal Health Awareness Day

Connecticut House Democrats stand strong in our commitment to improving maternal health for all, from prenatal care to postpartum support. We’ve passed critical legislation like the Pregnancy and Postpartum Support Act and expanded Medicaid coverage to ensure that every patient receives the care they deserve. But our work isn’t done—let’s continue to fight for better outcomes and a healthier future for all Connecticut families.

United Illuminating Public Comment Hearing

I want to make you all aware that United Illuminating has submitted a “Rate Case” to the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) to amend its rate schedules and address what they say is a $105 million operating deficiency for their upcoming rate year.

According to United Illuminating, this amendment would mean the average residential customer using 700 KW per month would see an increase of about $24.64 to their monthly bill.

They are claiming that the operating deficit is driven by structural deficiencies in previous rate settings, unrecovered costs, increasing operational costs, and environmental remediation expenses.

As part of the application process, there will be three public comment hearings where you can make your voice heard: Monday, January 27 @ 5:30PM – Margaret Morton Government Center, 999 Broad Street, Bridgeport, CT 06604Monday, March 10 @ 5:30PM – Fairfield Public Library, 1080 Old Post Road, Fairfield, CT 06824Tuesday, March 18 @ 12PM – REMOTE ACCESS: Meeting Registration – Zoom. If you want to read UI’s full application, click here.

The application includes detailed testimony and exhibits from various panels covering: Regulatory policyElectric operationsCapital investmentRevenue requirementsCompensation and benefitsCustomer serviceEnvironmental remediationCost of capitalSales and revenue forecastAllocated cost of serviceRate design I hope you’ll take the opportunity to attend one of these meetings and speak your mind on this proposed rate change. The more specific you are able to be in your testimony the more helpful it will be.
